就外语学习行动而言,学生的意志品质的形成反映在三个阶段:初级阶段(下决心>、中级阶段(有信心>和高级阶段(有恒心>。初级阶段涉及学生要认清白己学习外语的客观需求,积极分析各种条件,确定学习行动目标和选择行动方式;中级阶段涉及学生要形成明确的理想和信心,学生学习外语的理想和信心经常取决于自己对外语学习的展望和对学习活动过程的评估以及外界的评价;高级阶段的学习恒心可以抵制在学习过程中主客观因素的干扰,表现为坚定的意志。上述三个阶段可以是一个连续的整体,反映着学生意志心理的素质,这种素质是否完善发育直接影响着外语学习的过程和结果。
发现,5―7岁的儿童自发使用组织策略的倾向不明显,8―9岁儿童开始出现自发使用组织策略,10―11岁儿童表现出较强的组织策略。在一般情况下,学生学习策略的获得随年龄增长而增加,年龄越大的学习者越具有复杂的策略能力,外语学习也是如此。
人们经常谈到外语学习的"年龄关键期”问题,所谓"年龄关键期”是指在一定的年龄范围内,外语学习可以自然而轻松地发展,而过了这一时期,大脑对于外语的反应将发生变化。德拉(Della>建议用"敏感期”描述这一局限性,因为儿童学习语言较为轻松,以后同样可以学习语言,只是效率不如儿童时期而已。
